Bison Attacks Woman Who Got Too Close To Its Calf

A 54-year-old woman from Iowa was rushed to the hospital after she was attacked by a bison in Custer State Park in South Dakota. Motorists stopped as a large herd of around 500 bison blocked the road.

While most people kept their distance, recording the majestic animals from far away, a few people decided to get an up-close look.

One woman ventured too close to a mother and its nursing calf and was attacked by one of the bison. The woman's belt got caught on the bison's horns as it dragged her across the street. It violently shook her around, which caused her pants to rip off.

That likely saved the woman's life as the bison ran off, leaving the woman unconscious on the ground to rejoin the herd.

She was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

A bystander captured a video of the violent attack and shared it on Facebook.

Local officials warned people not to approach the bison even if they are blocking the road.

"We would like to remind everyone to not pet the fluffy cows - also known as Bison/Buffalo. We have had calls about the fluffy cows blocking the road occasionally - some people are also getting too close," Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley said. "Remember this is their park and we are the guests ... please give them a break and keep your distance."
