Social media has a well-earned reputation for spreading misinformation, keeping us up at night and giving us FOMO, but sometimes it’s a surprising source of support and comfort. Threads user paigedav is learning that after her post this week that her ex, “the one that got away” and the only guy she’s ever truly been in love with got married the other day.
It hit her hard, as she always thought they’d find their way back to each other, but it didn’t happen before he got hitched to someone else. “People who have been here, please tell me this ache doesn’t last forever,” she wrote. “If you’ve survived this type of heartbreak, I really need your words today.”
People of the Internet have her back and shared advice and encouragement, including:
- "Have you considered, even for a moment, that perhaps YOU are the one who got away 🤍?"
- "Men don't marry the love of their life; they marry the woman in front of them when they're ready."
- "Give yourself grace, 🙏 the pain does fade. I promise you will smile again, laugh again, and see the joy in everyday things again. You've got this 💗."
- "I have never heard or believed any woman who lost a man missed out, and I’m not going to start now. So please don’t ever say he was the 'one that got away' again. The universe rejected him for you. Stay blessed."
- "Leave him in the past. It's brutal, but what option do you have? Stop wasting precious time on someone who doesn't deserve you. It'll take time, and some days will be harder than others. Let the emotions in, acknowledge them, have a cry, scream, smash something, then let them go. Be kind to yourself, you got this."
- "I was in your shoes before. It took years for me to get over him. In time, you will heal, and it will get better. Your ex will just be a memory from the past tucked far away in your thoughts. Wishing you the best."
- "The love stays, the pain fades. My first love and I used to joke that one day, we would be single at the same time and get back together. We didn't. We both married other people. I love him still and will until I die."
- And, finally, "He probably picks his nose and pees in the shower. Just keep that visual and be glad you’re not stuck with him! 🤪"
