Representatives from Paramount Skydance and California Attorney General Rob Bonta's office are set to meet on Monday (August 24) to discuss a potential settlement regarding the lawsuit aimed at blocking Paramount's $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. This meeting follows a court agreement that has put the merger on hold, with an antitrust trial scheduled for March 2027 unless resolved earlier.

The lawsuit, led by Bonta and a coalition of 12 state attorneys general, argues that the merger would reduce competition in film distribution and cable programming. They claim it would combine two of Hollywood's major film distributors, controlling approximately 27% of the wide-release theatrical film market. FOX Business reports that Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have rejected these claims, asserting that the merger would enhance competition in the evolving media industry.

Bonta has expressed a preference for resolving disputes outside the courtroom, stating in a CNBC interview that any settlement would require "robust structural remedies." He emphasized the importance of addressing the antitrust concerns outlined in the lawsuit.

The merger, initially agreed upon in February, remains under scrutiny despite clearance from the U.S. Department of Justice and European regulators. Paramount has committed to producing at least 30 theatrical films annually and keeping them in theaters for a minimum of 45 days, but Bonta's office argues that such promises are difficult to enforce.

As Variety reports, the meeting is part of ongoing efforts to reach a settlement, with pressure mounting from various industry stakeholders, including the Directors Guild of America and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. The outcome of these discussions could determine whether the merger proceeds or faces further legal challenges.
